Eastside Parish Council Meeting
Tuesday November 15, 2011

Present were Fr. Bill Grevatch, Fr. John Alphonse, Deacon Peter Burek, Phyllis Burclaff, Sean Bennett(R), Laurie Bootz(R), Mary Brotz(SM), Bruce Chopp(R), Rose Kampschroer(R), Patrick Kinney(SM), Sherry Kieffer(R), Mike Meverden(SM), John Neumueller(SM), Jill Schlueter(SM), Sue Soriano(SM), Glenn Sowinski(R), Denise Sullivan(R), Jean Tehan(SM), and David Wanserski(R)

The meeting began at 6:30 pm with prayer led by Fr. Alphonse.  Jean Tehan facilitated the meeting.

The minutes of the October 18, 2011, Parish Council Meeting were approved.

Father Bill gave an update on the Newman Ad Hoc Task Force. About half of the parishes approved the recommendations and half wanted them to stay the same. We probably will not be able to implement the new formula until next year because of lack of data concerning the use of parish buildings, which is needed in the new formula.  Father again wished to thank the committee for all their great work.

Sue Soriano gave an update on the New Roman Missal. The background work put in place seems to have paid off. Most comments from parishioners have been favorable. Music is coming together. Liturgy for Nursing Homes will be changing as well. Thanks to volunteers, worship aids with large text are being printed.

Deacon Peter addressed the new concealed weapon law and how it relates to the parishes. After some discussion it was decided to go with signage to prohibit guns in our churches on the Eastside.

Father Bill suggested a celebration to recognize St. Michael's Anniversary (September 4, 2012) and Church of the Resurrection's Building Anniversary (December 17, 2012). He would like to set up a committee to update the history of the Eastside Parishes. Perhaps Gary Gisselman would facilitate, since he is very interested in local church history. With this in mind Father would also like to set up a small task force to discuss the pastoral direction of Eastside Parishes for the next 10 to 20 years.  This will begin after Christmas.

The finance report given by Patrick Kinney indicates our expenses are slightly over budget in both parishes. Because interest rates are declining, our endowment funds available balances have also declined. This is a reflection of the present economy.  The council would like to receive a detailed Financial Report for both parishes at each Parish Council Meeting.

Education Committee:  All are encouraged to watch the EWTN Series "Catholicism" on Nov. 16-19. DVD sets of the "Catholicism" Series are available to borrow in each parish. Contact the parish office if interested.

Sacred Worship Committee: There will be an Ecumenical Prayer Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Wednesday, 11/23, and a Thanksgiving Mass at Resurrection on Thursday, 11/24.  The New Roma Missal changes will start the first Sunday of Advent.

Family Life Committee:  A Family Tubing Outing is scheduled at Sylvan Hills on February 9.

Social Justice Committee:   St. Vincent de Paul is in need of funds.  Fund raising options will be looked into.

Pastoral report given by Fr. Bill is as follows:

The Newsletter looks great and is very informative. Thanks to Laurie Bootz and Sherry Kieffer. It will also be available on our website www.eastsideparishes.com

Pictorial directory should be finished before Christmas.

St. Vincent de Paul has begun a recycling project to generate some revenue. The "Magic Paper Box" is in the small parking lot behind Family Video.

A net income of nearly $10,000 was made at the St. Michael Fall Festival.

The Christmas Mass Schedule will be in the Heart Works newsletter and also on the website.  There will be two Masses at each parish on Christmas Eve and one Mass at each parish on Christmas Day.

Taste of Christmas event will be held December 28, 2011, 5:30-8:00 pm at Resurrection.

There will be a Giving Tree in each of the churches beginning November 19.  This is a Youth Ministry project.

The Eastside Parish Mission will be January 22-24, 2012.  Fr. Jim Sicko from Lexington, Kentucky will be our Mission Presenter.

A flat Screen TV has been donated to St. Michael's and will be installed in the Gathering Space. It will be used for educational purposes and other parish activities.

Meeting was adjourned with a blessing from Fr. Bill.

Eastside Parish Council Meeting Minutes
October 18, 2011, 6:30 pm

Present:   Bill Grevatch, Fr. John Alphonse, Deacon Peter Burek, Sean Bennett(R), Laurie Bootz(R), Rose Kampschroer (R), Patrick Kenny (SM), Sherry Kieffer (R), Mike  Meverden (SM), John Neumueller (SM), Jill Schlueter (SM), Tom Schneider (SM),  Sue Soriano (SM), Jean Tehan (SM), Mary Anne Lenzner (R).

Begin with prayer led by Fr. Bill.

The Council minutes from September 29, 2011, were read and approved.

Forty Days for Life, presented by Sara Ryan:
Sara pointed out that 40 Days for Life is not just for Catholics. It encompasses at least 300 cities in the USA and many other parts of our world. Success has been seen by the many closures of Family Planning Agencies and resignation of workers at these agencies. The focus of the group is to inform the public with movies like "Blood Money" and "180 Degree Turn" and well known speakers like Abby Johnson.  A request was made for some financial support not only for this group but also Hope Pregnancy Center. Parishioners are invited to pray in front of Family Planning on Third Ave. and also to volunteer at the Hope Pregnancy Center.  Father suggested a $250.00 Eastside Parish donation to 40 Days for Life and to Hope Pregnancy Center.  The council accepted this proposal.

Task Force Update, presented by Fr. Bill:
A Task Force has been proposed to look into the future of the Eastside Parishes.  The goal would be to determine how to best serve the parishioners of the Eastside Parishes.  The Task Force will be faithful to our Catholic identity as well as the Pastoral and School Planning that has been done in our Diocese and Deanery.  The committee will consist of six to eight people.  Ray Mickevicius has volunteered to facilitate the group. The time frame for this project has not been determined.  Topics to be addressed will cover the major ministries in our parishes, and how to best use our facilities.

Newsletter Update, presented by Sherry Kieffer and Laurie Bootz:
An Eastside Parish Newsletter sample was presented and met with favorable response from the Council.  The first "Heart Works" newsletter, to be mailed in November, will include reasons for changes in the liturgy.  Another newsletter is planned for distribution before Lent.  Mary Ann Lenzner and the Stewardship Committee are overseeing the newsletter.

Ad Hoc Update, presented by Fr. Bill
Priests will be meeting on Friday, October 21, to vote on proposals of how these $1.9 million subsidies to NCS will be divided up between the parishes involved.

New Missal Updates, presented by Sue Soriano
The Church community is learning service music before each Mass led by our musicians. Articles are also in the bulletin about the changes, they are also available on the website www.eastsideparishes.org.  Three minute video clips will be shown at the end of each weekend Mass explaining the Mass and the changes that will be taking place.  We hope this will make for a smooth transition in our worship.

Financial Council, presented by Patrick Kinney
Resurrection envelopes and endowments are down and expenses are up slightly.  St. Michael's envelopes are about the same as last year at this time, expenses are under budget at this time.  One of the financial concerns for both parishes is the Diocesan Annual Appeal. The target quota for each parish has increased approximately $5,000. Hopefully the matching gift in both parishes will encourage parishioners to increase their giving to the Appeal. Traditionally, about 30 % of the parish members give most of the financial support to their parish.  Automatic withdrawal is beneficial in this mobile society.  Fall Festival finances will be reported next month.

Committee reports were skipped for this session due to time.

 Pastor's Report, by Fr. Bill
Updating of the Parish history is important in view of the anniversaries coming up in September of 2012 for SM and in December of 2012 for CR.

  • The pictorial directory is almost finished and will be distributed sometime this year.
  • There will be a shortage of priests and parishes will have to adjust to this reality. All are asked to pray for vocations.
  • We are encouraged to take part in the Taste of Christmas, an Ecumenical event scheduled for downtown churches on December 28, 2011.
  • St. Vincent de Paul is fund raising by collecting recyclable paper in a "Magic Paper Box" dumpster set up in the St. Michael parking lot behind Family Video.
  • It cost about $40,000 a year to maintain the school building on Church of the Resurrection's property. Jubilee House uses it on Thursday evenings and St. Vincent de Paul meets there on Wednesdays.

Meeting was adjourned and Fr. Alphonse closed with prayer for the evening.
